TJ Maxx return policy for store-bought items

To get a full refund to the original source of payment, do all of the following:

  • Bring the item back to the store within 30 days of purchase.
  • Bring the original receipt.
  • Make sure the item is unworn, unwashed — in the same condition it was when you bought it.
  • Be prepared to show your driver’s license or another form of identification. The store representative usually only asks for ID when you don’t have a receipt, but it doesn’t hurt to be extra prepared.

  1. Can I return an item I purchased yesterday at Tj Maxx at Marshalls? I bought items in the San Luis obispo tj maxx while traveling. I live in Visalia, amd we only have Marshalls!

    1. I went to Marshalls in Nashua NH and my items had Marshall tags on them. And they would not return or exchange them cause I couldn’t find the right receipt. And I had just lost I can drive. I could not find my I’d drivers license. But the items still had Marshalls tags on them. The items were ugly. I wouldn’t wear them and they came to about $60. So unless you have a license and you accidentally lost your recept, you pretty much have to sick it up. That’s ridiculous. They.had Marshalls tags on them. That is the worst business move ever. Not everyone has a license nor do they have too. And I was asking people if they were to use their license and because they didn’t like the way I went about it. They wouldn’t exchange them. So not only did I do.what I was told I.needed they.wouldnt accept it. To me that’s just ridiculous. When the items hideous items mind you wouldn’t be returned I called corporate. And they did nothing about it either. I used to.love shopping at Marshalls totally boycotting it for the rest of my life. I did exactly what was told of me and they still wouldn’t return the items. Although I had identification proven I was me. I was treated like a total criminal..

  2. I tried to return an item I received as a gift, and they told me I couldn’t return it without their label on it. I told them it was probably removed because it was a gift and she still refused. I wasn’t looking to get any money back only a store credit because I shop at TJ Maxx all the time. She said I had to get the receipt and I said I wasn’t able to. It didn’t matter she said it couldn’t be returned. How many people leave on the price ticket when they are wrapping a present? I will have to reconsider shopping at TJ Maxx with such a horrible return policy.

  3. @Patricia: I understand that since it was a gift that it wouldn’t have the tags still on there, but you should have been given a gift receipt which you could use to return the gift. TJ Maxx cannot give you a refund, even if it’s store credit, if you do not have a receipt with the gift (without tags). That is their policy. They cannot just refund you for any item since they have to be able to confirm that the item is in fact from TJ Maxx. You’d be surprised how many people try to return items from other stores at TJ Maxx. That is why TJ Maxx has the return policy they do.

  4. I bought a swimming suit for $30 and six days later it was on sale for $19. Can I return with proof of purchase and receive the difference. One of your sales persons even told me it wasn’t going on sale when I asked when I bought it.

  5. Hi Donna..I think ur best bet would be to return the item with the receipt n get ur money back, than re-purchase it for the sale/clearance price. Good luck!!

  6. I received a purse from TJMax for Christmas and do not have a receipt, but the tags are still on it…may I please exchange the purse for another without the receipt..I would like to upgrade to a newer purse…Thank you for your time

  7. I purchased luggage from a Marshall’s in Tulsa. The luggage wheels did not performs well on our trip. Can I return it to a tjmaxx in Amarillo Texas?

  8. Can items purchased at Marshall’s/Home Goods be returned at T J Maxx? We were out of state visiting relatives when we bought some luggage only to realize when we returned home that it was damaged. TJ Maxx is in another town about 30 miles away but there is no Marshall’s/ Home Goods near. Thanks!

    1. I purchased a purse at a Marshalls sore. I placed it on my charge. I would like to return it for a cash refund. Is this possible. My card is current and in good standing/

      1. Helen,
Typically, the refund goes on your card. You can check with your Marshalls store to see if they’ll handle it differently.

I was out of state when I purchased a handbag at TJ Maxx in Buckhead Atlanta, GA on Oct 19, 2014 & tried to return it in my home state of Pennsylvania. I was told I had to have the tag on the bag because there was no tag on the bag which the Sales Rep had to go on the floor to scan the same bag that had a sales tag on it (which I had explained to the Sales Manager) but I had the receipt which transaction was labeled as “19 – ACCESSORIES 757670 299.99T which was purchased on my debit card. I showed the receipt to the Sale Manager which informed me that I could not return the item because (1) The designer is not one of TJ Maxx retailer via Sloan & Alex; (2) I need the sales tag or I can take it back to TJ Max in Buckhead Atlanta. Note: the Sales Manager contacted TJ Maxx in Buckhead Atlanta which informed the Sales Manager that designer handbag is a retailer at that store.

That said, I could not return nor get a refund even though I have a receipt. I am a Disabled Veteran & I have always enjoyed shopping at TJ Maxx, however from this treatment I will no longer remain a customer.

    1. I do not blame you for no longer shopping at TJ Maxx. Although I moved to a town that does not have a TJ Maxx, after reading your experience, I will not shop there when I travel back to my home town. That is deplorable customer service. Is small claims an option? They clearly should have refunded your money.

  10. I purchased a purse in November of 2015. It was very expensive. The strap broke at 4mo. I have the recipt. Do you think I can return for store credit?
